The Heat is On, Exhaustion, and Prayers for Family and Tennessee Flood Victims

We are so lucky, well most of the time, to have deer roaming freely in our neighborhoods. They are so used to people and even vehicles. This one, simply looks up, and goes on about eating the neighbors lilies, lol. You can barely seem him in the picture. He’s right in the middle. I actually Thank God in the mornings for the wildlife he puts in our midst. It makes me feel good knowing that if I can’t be out exploring God’s beauty at least he will bring it to me in some fashion.

The Heat is On

Summer is trying to squeeze out as much heat upon us as it can. Although areas to our Southwest seem to have had more heat warnings. We’ve had temps around 95-97. The maintenance crew was in our office -not from our company but I guess who ever owns the buildings send in someone to monitor the “new fangled” system they put in back in spring. They have had issue with it since. The old one seemed to work fine and only had to be adjusted when a frontal boundary came through but this one has kept nearly NO ONE happy. lol. Everyone is either blasted to the Arctic cold or melting in a pool of humid and extremely warm air. Eventually the break room and my office took the brunt of the arctic air while the rest became somewhat comfortable. I vowed to endure it with my heater going and a wool cape that resembles a wool throw one would have upon them in the coldest of winter days.

So the maintenance guys were in again testing the “whatever it is they test” throughout the building – air holes, I don’t know. And I told them how cold it was in my office. So now I guess they turned the vent off and so this week this has been the story.

Once again, I vowed to put up with it. I was the one that said I was cold. One can only laugh. I hate to complain. Fall is coming and then I guess it will be cold in there. lol lol lol. I don’t know what the answer is, other than to turn my fan on HIGH. I moved it closer to me and let it blow directly on my face and yesterday I make sure I drink lots of ice water. I also can put cold paper towels on my neck.

Life and “the universe” as they call it, just seems to play together sometimes. And so this was Monday’s calendar.

Well, heck yeah I’m hot! lol But bless their hearts, they just can’t figure this system out. I guess the owners were trying some new fangled system to save money but it’s just not working.

Exhaustion

So I’m not sure if the heat played a part in this or not. All I know is that around Noon on Monday I began feeling extremely tired. It was hard to get through the day. I didn’t feel bad or sick as much as I just felt lifeless. And maybe I was just dehydrated. But when I went home, I went straight to bed. I got up and ate dinner which is how I knew I wasn’t sickly. Dinner was good and I went back to bed.

Sleep was…….well……good but in the middle of the night I guess I had a weird nightmare. My body was so tired that whenever I was trying to wake up, I couldn’t. I couldn’t move. I tried to move my arms and legs but they wouldn’t move. I had to pray to wake up as it felt some force was over me not allowing me to wake up or move. I was determined to overcome whatever was overpowering me. I guess it was a weird dream. I woke up when I prayed Lord get rid of whatever is overpowering me. I woke up from the dream at that point. It freaked me out. It kinda bothered me all day when I thought of it. I think my body was just so tired it really didn’t want to move as I was waking up, because it kinda felt that way also when I was awake. I just wanted to be!

I still felt exhausted when I got up yesterday morning (Tuesday morning) still. But I was hungry and determined to get payroll done and then come home and go to bed again.

At work, I closed the blinds, and then kept icy cold water and drinks in front of me. I have no idea if it was the heat or not – but it certainly wasn’t helping any – but I was determined to make the situation better. The blinds down brought the temp down to 78 and I made sure to drink a lot of fluids. See I have blood pressure meds that have a water pill in them and so that can make things worse from a dehydration stand point.

Anyway by Noon I began to feel like I was coming back to life. During the exhaustion period, I couldn’t not do anything other than “get through the moment” – no planning, no thinking about the next thing. So by Noon I actually began to feel better in the way that I was less tired but also able to think about my to do list and what I would do when I got home. So I knew I was on the mend. The idea crossed my mind that perhaps I was getting “the dreaded” but no other signs. I considered even staying home as the tiredness was so debilitating but then who calls in b/c they are tired? I’m tired a lot, I’d have to be off A LOT if that was a reason to call in. And I’m not going to get a test for being tired. Not even sure they would give one.

So I’m much better. Not quite to perfection but feeling better anyway. Much more normal!

Pray for Family

Speaking of the dreaded. I have some family near and dear to heart that likely have “the dreaded”. I’m calling it the “the dreaded” b/c I think if you mention it in some media forms the post is not broadcast or meeting the algorithms now. So I try not to mention it.

So they are not getting tested – or haven’t yet anyway – but I don’t want to mention who they are. For the “trolls” or the “stalkers” to ease your mind – NO I’ve not been around them to expose anyone so rest your fears. Anyway, I’m really worried about them, VERY worried. So please put up some prayers that God heals quickly, no long term issues, and no respiratory issues and no problems from this. One of them has had pneumonia before and once you get it, it can be easy to get again and I worry about that.

Flood Victims and Families of the Deceased

I was shocked to realize that one of the people that lost their lives in the flooding, was a lady I had worked with at the envelope plant, Jane Warfield. She retired some twenty years ago and moved to Waverly. She would have been 81 or so I think. Her husband also passed. This was sad. I don’t know the details of her particular story but it certainly made this more personal. And it’s sad to see the names listed. You realize where each name is, there is a family heavy with grief. And this is not the entire list. I also had a teacher once by the name of Linda Arnold. I think that was her name. I have no idea if that is her. I took this pic to send my friends at the envelope plant.

Hoping to find out more information. At least I understood this was the confirmed deaths, but there were some that were still missing. It’s tough to watch the news coverage on this. Even the law enforcement having a tough time keeping composure and breaking down on the news briefings. One said “Sorry guys you have to realize we grew up in this community and these were all people we knew”. There are numerous homes that just floated away.

So prayers for these folks. I want to do something! Perhaps make a donation or send supplies, but for right now I’m just praying.

One never knows what a day will bring. Certainly those folks didn’t know they would get 13-17 inches of rain and drown at their place of dwelling or their place of work, or be swept away by a surprise tidal flooding wave.

Have a Joyous Day and Enjoy it Whatever You Do

I have to leave you with encouragement after that. Here’s your “Meanwhile in Texas” section of the day. My little toot – my Little Roo. Don’t you just want to scoop him up and give him some loving? Gosh I miss him.

Well, not sure this is encouraging but I ran across this picture yesterday. I think it was in my Facebook memories. It made me cry. I miss them so much. I know though, that the Lord just knows what we can handle and what we can’t. I know that for this season while we moved Mom, are having Mom live with us, and will be moving her again – and for the time frame where we went to see our Grandson and will go again, God just knew we needed less responsibility. But my heart misses them both so much. Especially the love that Maisy gave me that just stole my heart. How she loved me at times when it seemed like no one else did. God used her to warm my heart.

I know in my heart there will be another special dog or two. But now is not the time. When I get sad I think about how good God was to send us Maisy and Roger and I know that in time and I trust – that God will again send us two more amazing doggies to love and care for and have them care for us! I’m so looking forward to it. But we need to get Mom settled and take a couple of trips. I’m thinking spring/summer/fall of 2022. Stay tuned.

You Know Fall is Coming When You See This

There seem to be spiders outside everywhere before fall gets here. Not sure why but I guess that is why you see so many spider decorations at Halloween.

Well, I need to go and get ready. I’m glad to be feeling better and glad I can work toward my to do list. Got the ironing done yesterday after work – pressing the wrinkles out of some work pants. I let them hang dry as my clothes last longer when I do that. Also got the sunroom sofa blankets put back on. I know ya’ll liked the sofa sunroom furniture pattern but I don’t. So I cover them with blankets/quilts. I had washed them and now all is ready for fall. It also makes them comfy too.

Now to move on to set my next hair appt – likely 10 to 12 weeks out and do my computer updates on the Mac, order vacuum bags for the new vacuum. Then I can do my To Do List that is hard to get to, lol. Dinner tomorrow night with neighbor and friend Christie! Can’t wait to catch up with her.

Ok – over and out! Probably will blog again on Friday morning. Whatcha got going on in your week?

Making a Bucket List for Summer

So we are “back in business”! Now that things are getting back to normal – whatever normal was, we are getting our plans on and bucket listing again. Our bucket list looks quite a bit different than someone in their 30’s or 40’s but these are 1)Things we want to do by end of summer. 2) Ideas for places we would really like to eat 3) Places we would like to go if given the chance. 3) Meals out with a few friends. 4) Need to do items (not very many) 5) Dishes we really want to cook 6) Sometimes personal to do items are on there. 7) Sometimes cleaning/chores get put on there esp if they are big ones.

We have a lot of restaurants we want to take Mom to and Mom’s wishes were put on the list. There are a lot of new restaurants since COVID that we want to try.

I have been wanting to get this bucket list done since early May but two months later, here we are. It’s just been difficult to find the time as really – the bucket list is a non-essential item. It’s a fun thing. We have been nose the grindstone for two months with not much time for planning or even thinking about non-essential items. It took forever just to find time to do this list, so you know we’ve not had much time to even think about doing any of these things other than in conversation (“one day”).

Ahhhh, so this simple bucket list means the world to me. It’s an icon – a picture of normal, a picture of happy times, a picture of doing fun things together, or meeting goals, or getting things accomplished.

It’ll be fun to see what we get done. It’s not a list to make you hurry, unless you look at it like “let’s hurry up and have fun”. The list helps us remember when we are planning our weekends, of all the options we have. Or in spare time – what our goals are. It keeps it in the forefront of our minds.

There are so many restaurants we would like to go to we actually have a separate restaurant list, lol. In the pic above you can see the little short list. I think we made that back when we planned our anniversary.

Make Your Own Bucket List

It’s fun to sit back with a pen and a cup of coffee and write down all the things you would like to do, places you would like to go, books you wanna read, hikes you wanna do, places you wanna shop….whatever your hype is.

Then while sitting with the family – at a table or restaurant – have a pen and paper handy – or write on a napkin as we have, and ask what the family members would like to do, goals they have, things they want to do. Some things may surprise you!

Then just buy some poster board (the half cut ones work great). I created a little bucket list posting area of our kitchen. And I use a black sharpie.

It’s good to do them by season. I usually do about three per year as it seems to work out better than doing four.

Winter into Spring, Summer, Fall/Christmas. Mainly I’m too busy in the fall to do the winter one as we have more to do and are busier that time of year so I have to clump part of winter in the fall one and the last part of winter into the spring one, lol. It works.

BUCKET LIST FOR MEAL PLANNING

We also have a chalkboard that we use for meal planning. If you have followed my blog for long, you have seen it. We have a fairly large black board and we list all the meals we want to fix on one side (we also look in our freezer and see what we have already) and then we plan meals off of that board on the other side.

I went to the store last night after a VERY long 11 hour day at work yesterday. Always funny to see extra things on your menu. Was it something we told Alexa she didn’t understand? Or was it George playing tricks? I think it was the latter. But you never know! lol. One thing’s for sure – we don’t need any extra fat butts around here in these parts! lol I’m scared to think about what a camel pump is. :-O

Chicken in a Reynolds Oven Bag

Ok, so….buy those Reynold’s Oven bags, and then plan some chicken or steak dinners- or pork chops – I’m sure you could use just about any meat. The box had a chicken recipe on the back for an example. I followed it, sort of. Mom was fixing the vegetables as we’d been to the farmers market so I only added onion and green pepper.

I wanted my chicken to marinate first so I just used storage bags to let them marinate in the fridge for a while in Italian dressing.

Here’s what I used.

We keep a pretty full fridge going! And you can see our July 4 – other half – of the watermelon!

I just think the dinner in the bag thing is a great option for “what’s for dinner”. It really made the chicken tender cooked in an hour’s time. I had a lot of chicken in one bag. Very tender. For chicken – I had two types – bone in with the skin and no bone, skinless- the chicken with no bone/skinless turned out much better with better flavor. But they were both good.

I really like cooking the chicken with skin/bone in – in the air fryer with a little bit of Nashville hot seasonings. Oh it is so crispy and good. The key is adding olive oil rub on top of and under the skin, and putting your seasonings on and under the skin pocket. So flavorful! I am glad I learned to put rubs UNDER the skin pockets!

Well that is about all I know other than…..

We picked up my car from the shop after work yesterday too (yes we were really late eating dinner, but Mom was patient with us). I know it’s hard for her to eat so late and her eating schedule has changed a bit. It was hard for me too, to eat so late, but I learned to snack a little if I needed to because b/w 11 a.m. when I eat lunch and 7 or 8 p.m. is a long time. Anyway, oil was leaking so they had to fix a seal and do an oil change as well and that was $700 ish at Firestone. I think that is high, but we get our cars back very quickly when we leave them there. They have been very customer oriented. So there is that. Very friendly here.

I guess I better get to work. Busy week cramming five days into four, but most of that was yesterday. I’ve about caught up with the normal schedule, but it is quarter end and very busy. The real success of “how payroll went” will be determined on Friday when we see how many did/didn’t get paid properly. We’ll see how many calls I get. Just a lot going on that would make it easy for mistakes to be made. Someone added time on a termed employee yesterday that plugged up our payroll processing/balancing and then someone made a mistake while data entering something that messed up the banking deposits again, but those were easily found/fixed. Also someone entered a punch with a date of 2002! lol. All of these probably caused about an hour and half delay total. But I got through it. Now to get the “after payroll” stuff done and tomorrow and Friday will focus on quarter end and working on payroll errors where PTO’s were not turned in, time not turned in etc. Should be a fun Friday for that. Also have to work on HOL pay some this week. So it’ll be a busy one. OH did I mention it was quarter end? I won’t have a lot of time this week to work on it but I should get some. It’ll be dependent upon how many of the plants forgot to pay things as to how much time I have to work on it. I may be busy fixing errors and doing back pay, creating emergency checks and funding through pay cards. lol. Might as well expect it. That way if it doesn’t happen I will be pleasantly surprised. Yea haw!

So….what is on YOUR BUCKET LIST THIS SUMMER? I hope you do one, even if it’s just for yourself!

Meanwhile back in TEXAS! Little Roo in his Jammies!

Concert, Dinner and Shopping in Franklin, TN and other July 4th Weekend Activities!

Gabes, Franklin, TN near Cool Springs Mall

Saturday afternoon, we began excursion #2 of the day. We went by Gabes, the Cool Springs discount store. It was a LOT busier than in January when we went. Matter of fact, just people in your way a little more than you wanted. The isles are small and with a buggy two people can’t go down them well. But we got through the maze. I bought a couple of clothing pieces. I had my cart stacked with pants to try on as I just knew the fitting rooms would be open. But no, they lost some sales since I could not try on clothes. I mean…really? At this point they need to be open!!

I am going to put a “pants buying” mission on the calendar so I can get a shopping day for this. I also could use a few summer pieces for week since I have gained weight again and had given away all my large sizes. Ugh! I need to go the other direction. It’s always a battle on a normal basis, but give us a year like last year and then like this year – and we are having to eat horribly on the go, fast food and such. Plus Mom eats a lot of fattening type foods (white bread, not whole grain, a lot of burgers, regular pasta and not whole grain, fried foods, etc.) and we end up eating it too. For example, I gave up chips but those are back in the house. A huge temptation for me. So once I get myself a bit settled, I need to go back to working on my weight. ::sigh:: Once I lose again, I have two big containers of clothes waiting on me!

So I only have the two pair of jean capris for summer and really need at least ONE more pair to avoid having to do extra darks. Anyway, at Gabes, I bought a lot of the pump hand soap. We go through that pretty fast and I like to buy different kinds. I buy those face wash towelettes and I bought a bunch of those and some cosmetic items. It’s “the hunt” and the “good buys” that are fun to find.

The Bottle Shop, Franklin, TN

George got a gift card to the Bottle shop. I think it was for letting Katy and Cody have his car for a week. So we went and picked out a few things from there. It’s just a great place for finding a few special bottles of wine with good prices. They also have a few liquor items and also craft beer that you can take home in growlers. We never do though as we are usually doing other things and not going straight home. They also have a little gift section, including cards.

Gamay, a French Wine we love, The Bottle Shop, Franklin

You may have heard me talk about Gamay before. We had bought this and really liked it. I kept it in my photos for a long time so we could buy another one. And then I didn’t find it again, and finally just erased the photo. Now I found it! lol

We then had just enough time to get to our 5:30 reservations at Americana Taphouse. I picked this restaurant as the others nearby, Gray’s, 55 South, and a few others were just a little more pricey than I really thought we should spend right now. Instead $25 to $35 for an entre plate plus ala carte for everything you add, I was looking for $15 to $24 ish. We always add drinks, sometimes an appetizer or salad anyway. So “the price was right” at this restaurant. I had fish and chips and added a Caesar salad.

Americana Taphouse, Franklin, TN

As six o’clock approached, more people began arriving and the place was almost entirely full by the time we left. Note to self: five-thirty is an excellent time to eat dinner out around these parts!

Americana Taphouse, Franklin, TN

The Americana Taphouse is still owned by Puckets. It’s no longer Pucket’s Boathouse. It was hard to keep fresh seafood coming in and they flipped it around to be more accommodating for what they could resource. So it’s kinda like REALLY GOOD pub food, but with a few extra Nashville like flairs, like George’s Hot Chicken PBLT – Pimiento, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato sandwich. They also had fish tacos. I almost had that, but I really wanted the cod (fish and chips). It was all really good!

I would have taken a pic of the food but we were so deep in conversation about a few things and having a great time talking so I didn’t even think about it.

Paleta de Mango Kolsch, Americana Taphouse, Franklin, TN
Savory Spice Shop, Franklin, TN

Shopping on Main Street in Franklin is quite fun. Best to go before night time as many shops close, and even some were closed for the 4th weekend. Some are family owned type of shops, so anything goes. But some chose to be open. This spice store, The Savory Spice Shop, was open. We bought some pork chop seasoning and some dried shallots. They are very attentive and will let you try anything as long as they open it for you and give you the sample. A great little place!

East Main, Franklin, TN

“Oops! We have time left over, we shopped all around, what we gonna do now?”

“Well, there is little Wine Bar down the street? Wanna sip a glass of wine til concert time?”

The wine bar inside was calm, dimly lit, and quiet. Honestly, it was really really nice! The outside vibe was sunny with laughter and conversation. We chose the quiet spot with air conditioning, lol. We enjoyed picking the wine from the menu. I chose a French wine and we sipped, talked, and also sat some in quietness, checked phones, etc. We had an hour after all, so we could do it all. The bathrooms were nice. It was a converted old house and in the bathroom you could see the “charm” of the old house. It gave me a quick desire to “redo an old house” but then I thought of my age and quickly changed my mind. I just love to decorate is all. And it would be fun to decorate an old house into a comfort zone mixture of lace and wood. I’d have to give up my beach vibe rooms. Ahh, fun to dream but, enhhhh, probably more fun to just travel and decorate a cottage up if I ever did have to move again or RV’d with a little cottage base. (hint hint). Not gonna happen, but fun to dream.

Then on to the Franklin Theatre where our concert would be. Often I end up way behind George. He thinks I’m with him and I’ve stopped to take a pic. He looks around often though, he’s used to it. He’ll discover I’m not by him and I’m somewhere behind taking pics. I noticed my iPhone was not taking good pics also – I think I changed the settings back when River was here. I adjusted it a bit to get some type of photo and I guess never changed it back. I changed it back yesterday and it should be set to take more pics and adjust itself to the lighting. Either that or Apple’s done something with an update to make it worse where you will want the next new phone, lol. They wouldn’t do that really would they? Wait didn’t they do something to the battery life so you’d you buy the next one? I think they admitted that one didn’t they? If you know, let me know.

Gray’s on Main, Franklin, TN
George and Sonya, headed to see Striking Matches, Franklin, TN

Absolutely LOVED and enjoyed the Striking Matches concert. We had seen them years ago at Third and Lindsley. George bought their 3 CD’s Morning, Noon, and Night. And we got to meet them. What a treat!

A horrible and tired picture of me with half styled hair and not a lot of makeup or glam! But what a surprise! Was happy to have my picture taken with such talented folks that I’ve listened to for a long time. They have a YouTube Channel that they post some of their songs on. Just look for Striking Matches wherever you listen to your music.

These two met at Belmont and were thrown together in class to do a collaboration and what a collaboration it was! It’s funny how things come to be. Love watching them perform.

So we got home about 11:30 as we had to drive about 45 to an hour back to Mount Juliet. Bed felt good. I had clean sheets as I had changed them a bit earlier Saturday afternoon.

Sunday morning, I got up to get dressed for church so we could head out. George informed me that Mom had changed her mind and didn’t want to go and was fixing breakfast instead. So I grabbed a cup of coffee and breakfast was ready. Mom said we were out so late she thought it was best to stay home. I told her it wasn’t a problem that we were prepared to go as I had gotten up to get dressed. Then she said really the main reason was that she was hungry as she did not eat much the night before since we were gone.

So with breakfast on the table and the surprise last minute change of her plans, we didn’t go to church. I did my devo as I do EVERY day, not just on Sunday. And I guess we’ll see what next week brings. lol

So with not spending half a day out going to church, it opened up the morning. And I was able to take a walk after breakfast. I ate breakfast before I was really hungry. I usually wait til I’m hungry before eating. Anyway, didn’t want to be rude so I ate and then went for a walk to walk off dinner and breakfast.

The walk was nice.

We have some cherry tomatoes about to come in. And there are lots of herbs. George brought a lot of herbs in the house this weekend to dry.

Can you believe how busy our couple of days have been?

Then we went to see Paul and Judy yesterday. They are moving soon and had some things for sale and wanted to see if we wanted anything. George bought some books and Judy gave me a couple of books that she had bought that I’m looking forward to reading. It’s REALLY making me want to read. I think it’s a good time in my life to read more and get out of my own head a bit. I was so excited to meet their dog! Their dog was excited to meet us. We hit it off so well that Judy said “you can’t have my dog!” lol lol lol His name is Ozzie! He looks so much like Maisy dog only without the white spots.

Oh what fun and what delight this gave me, to pet and hug dog that looked and acted like my Maisy girl. I had prayed I would meet another dog like that. And I believe I did. He was a sweet dog. I’m so glad to meet him.

On the way home, George surprised me with a quick stop at a local taproom, Catch 22. We had a brewsky before heading home. Once home, I helped Mom change the sheets on her bed, fixed up a good lighted area for our “Puzzle Station”, which we started, and we watched some of my sailing shows, and George began fixing steaks. He actually grilled them! They were so good. They are good anyway he fixes them. We then began watching a history about Nashville after dinner – while waiting for dark thirty so the fireworks would start. We only got half way through. It’s very interesting.

Once it got dark we headed out to see the fireworks all around while sitting on the front porch. I do believe we made some memories. We had good disabilities for some fairly impressive shows. I think we were seeing a show from Circle K ranch not too far away and just at an angle where there were not many trees. Then neighbors down the street had some and a few streets over. We had some good ones.

We ate watermelon on the porch.

And most impressive was the view I saw from the news of the gathering in downtown Nashville. Wow. Just Wow. Everyone celebrating not only July 4 but just being able to get together as a crowd again. Here’s a screenshot.

Anyway, what a great 4th! One of the best ones I’ve had! Also want to share a pic that Mom shared on Facebook.

Mom, Me, and Dad

The scar on my right eyebrow (left in the pic, lol) shows. Before seatbelt requirements, I hit the dashboard once when the car driver slammed on the breaks – not sure who was driving. I don’t know what happened. A nurse was at Nanny’s house when we arrived and said “I think you better go get stitches” so we went to ER. Now I can “do my brows” – and have since high school – so you can’t see the scar. This pic was over 50 years ago I guess, lol.

Meanwhile in TX…….I can see River in my Dad. And Dad in River! lol

Ok ya’ll. What an entry. That should keep you for a few days. I’ll be back sometime before the work week is over – 2 to 3 days. So here’s what’s up:

I have to do two days worth of work tomorrow so it’s a LONG day – going in early and possibly staying late. Today we have a low key day, don’t wanna go anywhere but probably the store. I need to make sure Mom is set up for the week and me too, with lunches and snacks for work. I need to do some ironing for the week. I will try to do the bucket list and read and puzzle and make my Italian chicken cooked in a bag today. This week is kinda low key. We may do trivia night Thursday night with friends. Next Saturday is the day we go to look at flooring. 😉 We will be planning Mom’s birthday later in the month. I think she wants to do Hermitage Steakhouse so we’ll get that on the calendar and make reservations. Glad for a low key week though and now maybe things will settle a bit and we can relax some. I’ve enjoyed having a peaceful two hours to work on the blog. Need to get breakfast and start on some chores/cleaning so I can enjoy the day later.
