Sacred Saturdays and Productive Downtime

Good morning! I thought I’d jump in for a quick hello this morning. I’m excited to say I had another full day at home yesterday and that plus my day off Thursday has put my psyche in better shape, not to mention the house. It’s still not perfect and honestly I worked on other things yesterday. I mainly got my to do list for the day completed and that made me happy. I was even able to work on files and start the next video.

Saturday’s To Do List was Completed

I wore Alexa out yesterday giving her my grocery list. What started out as small has vastly increased. I wonder if she is able to carry on with the strain on her memory now, lol. Please note Mom’s medicine basket and vitamins, and Fancy’s meds in the plastic bag. And the treat basket for the dogs. I managed to store all the dog food underneath the table from Mom’s Chewey’s order. I was hoping we could eliminate the table as the kitchen looked great without it but it’s a quite useful table. You know how horizontal real estate space is. It’s in short supply and we are all itching to find some and cover it up.

I worked on my “wellness company” order which ships on the 12th. Added a couple of things for this week. And making a list of things I might add next month. I’m needing some “snacky” items so I’ll leave potato chips alone. I love a good crunch.

George has a birthday coming up, also on the 12th. I managed to get his birthday gifts wrapped. I have a few more things to add, but I’m not going to the store again until Tues night.

I also changed George’s sheets and got those washed. I ironed a few things. I have been putting off wearing my linen tops and they are so comfy in this hot weather. So I got those done and pressed some wrinkles out of some pants.

I tested the alarms in the house for their batteries for fire and carbon monoxide. I didn’t check the one downstairs though. We need to check that one too.

Restocked my vitamins for the week.

Made Brownies to take to Don & Lisa’s.

And gave George a hair cut.

And then……Yay……Got to work on my videos.

So, yeah, I’ve got the files pulled in for this video which includes St Patty’s, Mom’s Visit at Easter, and the finding of her house. So I’m feeling better about being behind. That covered a lot of the year right there. I have files for about two more videos after this one. I always want to be a little bit behind, lol. Do you know how happy this made me? Yes I’m very happy to be able to do this.

Why Do I Want to Do So Much with Such Little Time?

I guess my aspirations in life far outweigh the time I have. I was thinking about that yesterday and wondering why I have so much I want to do. What inspires me to want to do x, y, z, z1, z2, z3? lol My immediate conclusion was “because I don’t want to be bored!” I almost wanted to argue with myself. Really? That is why you put so much on the list? Well, that was my soul’s answer. I’m not sure it is a good answer. But I ALSO KNOW that I get deep satisfaction from accomplishing anything I set out to do. It gives me glee. And that’s all I really know without digging down into the surface. But there is definitely something that I enjoy about doing the videos, and creating something with the photos and video I’ve taken.

I’m looking forward to 2022 because I want to upgrade to Final Cut Pro! :-). I can do more with it and take it to the next level as far as what all I can do. iMovie is limited. But it has been great to learn from. And YouTube is great for teaching. I can have more layers within the video settings and various fonts and other things to add more special things to the videos. That said I’ve still not mastered iMovie to perfection nor done all the things with Canva that I could. But I’ve about tapped into what I wanted to do and I am finding myself wanting to do certain things now that iMovie won’t let me, so that to me is a sign I’m ready. But I know there is a bit of a learning curve. I’ve not even taken my camera lessons yet. I just keep going with the flow. I need to focus on that *somehow*. I’m going to have to push it to make it happen. I need to schedule it. But it’s like my health. I never find time to get the walking in.

BBQ Grilled Chicken by George! Love that Grilled Taste!

Much to my delight, George grilled yesterday. He has a sudden interest in grilling again and that is what delights my soul. I’ve missed grilled food. It used to be something one looked forward to as a child and a teen and other times in my life when the ingredients were gathered, the fire was started, the mouth watered. So grilled chicken and Brussel sprouts and it was so good.

He also had made homemade slaw and we had a corn salad he made. Yum yum. Dinner was excellent.

Saturday’s are Sacred

Things are starting to feel a bit more normal now and falling into a routine with Mom and with the house now that flooring is down. The only problem I see really is that Mom is not getting out enough. And I think she has a time adjusting to our meal times.

We work all day and are ready to be home in the evenings and then on weekends I like to have at least one full day at home to get laundry, housework done, orders done, get ready for the next work week, take a glance and what all needs to be accomplished for the next week, and so forth. And then the other day is errands, grocery, going to church, or going other places. I can deal with a mix of the two if I get a “morning” time to get things done. If I’m going out in the mornings then I’m not near as productive when we come back. So Saturday morning is really critical and important for me in many ways. It’s the only day I can truly sleep until I wake up with no alarms. It’s the only day I can hang in PJ’s all morning and sip coffee.

Mom used to eat out every Saturday morning. So we are completely opposite. I cringe to think of giving up my Saturday mornings. But I can give up some. So I guess we just have to plan it. I also do not eat big meals at the beginning of the day anymore. So we have that difference. It’s not like I can’t periodically though as I love breakfast. I just like to wait til I’m hungry to eat it though. Mom likes to eat with a few minutes of getting up. I probably don’t eat until after I’ve been up 3 or 4 hours. I get up in the 4 a.m. hour and eat around 8 at my desk at work. And it’s never a huge deal.

So Mom on the other hand sits here all day and is ready to get out and go somewhere. She is not driving up here so she can’t get out safely by herself. She can’t see anyway so it’s really a blessing that she is not driving so she doesn’t hurt herself or anyone else.

She skipped church last week and we really didn’t have appointments this week so she likely is stir crazy. She laid down yesterday simply because “there was nothing else to do” she said.

Getting Mom Out of the House

So we have a lot of things going on this week that she will get out of the house for. Then she will likely be ready for a rest. Church, eating, and appointments seems all that she really wants to do. She doesn’t get anything out of shopping anymore – mainly cannot see I guess. She can’t walk very far either as it seems to hurt her to get up and move at all some times. I hear her saying “whew” over and over as if it has just taken all of her energy to get across the room.

So we have church today, George’s birthday outings this week, and her eye appointment on Friday. We will then plan an excursion one Saturday for breakfast out and a couple of other stops and take her on a tour of Lebanon. But she really doesn’t seem to want to be out for very long.

That is the only thing we need to work on I guess is making sure that she gets out some. This past week has been exceptional though being that we had the flooring put down and just really needed to be home more. The fact that she skipped church didn’t help. Anyway, like anything, we’ll keep trying to perfect to what she needs just like we do for what we need.

So we invited her to go with us today to D & L’s but the length of the day I think was going to be too much for her and she is not exactly a social butterfly. So I think she prefers to be home much of the time anyway. Like I said she mainly just wants to go out and eat and to church. I think this move and change has taken a lot out of her. I also think she is sad about the whole thing. I know she is looking forward to her house, but I’m sure she is worried over her heart and overall health and the ability to keep living on her own. And well, that is another story for another day and another venue.

Ok so over an out. Going for some pool time and friend time after taking Mom to church and through a drive through of her choice. Looking forward to seeing our friends!

Flooring is Scheduled, Doc Appts, Tests, and the Battle for Time

The BIG NEWs is that the flooring will be put down this Thursday and Friday. George said “yes” to the dates because he will be working from home Thursday and also Mom will be here Friday. I was shocked, I was planning to take off for whatever day they were coming but needed to be able to help set the timing. I had asked George not to schedule it for this week, but it is done and under control and I really don’t have to be involved. So it may be my turn when they come put the carpet in. The carpet was not in yet. But that is a good thing. We will be able to put stuff in the bedrooms then while they put the flooring down in other rooms.

I have spent ALL week after work moving glassware and breakable items from my two china cabinets into the sun room. I started Sunday night I think and then Monday night and then last night George was already moving all the wine bottles from our three wine racks. Yes we have three b/c George makes wine. Although he hasn’t made a batch in a while as our year has been so freaking busy. But he does have a batch going now and another one to do after that one. Summer is the best time of course because it is warm enough in the basement for it to ferment properly.

We moved a lot of stuff last night, even Mom tried to help but she is just not able to walk around and do much. It wears her out quickly and she has to sit. So tonight we’ll have a last night of moving stuff. And really there is not that much left. Another hour with George and I moving things we’ll have it ready to go where they can move the furniture. (We just move the stuff off of the furniture but there was a lot of that when you think of china cabinets, wine racks, liquor cabinet, plus all Mom’s 8 containers of food from her pantry sitting in our living room.)

You realize how dusty and nasty things become when you start moving things completely off shelves and out of the corners! Oh my gosh. I have just about quit dusting and vacuuming b/c it was a constant battle and time I didn’t have this year. I told Mom, “when you have poop on your floor, why dust?” She laughed. With an old dog and carpets – it just doesn’t mix. We will still have carpets in the bedrooms but usually that was not where we would have the issues and we can shut the bedroom doors easily when leaving or when we are home if we get a new puppy and need to.

I woke up at 1:30 a.m. and looked at vacuums on Amazon Monday night. That also made Mom laugh! It is kinda funny. Except that at 3:00 p.m. the next day you drink coffee and it still doesn’t work. lol

So Monday I took Mom to the heart doctor at Summit. That was an experience. Everyone was nice but whoever worked at the front desk didn’t come in and so the office wasn’t open. So much for trying to get an early appointment so it won’t impact work. What have they been saying about this next generation’s work ethic. That our world is in trouble. I believe you don’t have to say much. Don’t even have to give an opinion. Just look around and see who is working, who is showing up, who cares and who does not. Where are there openings? Everywhere! Actions speak louder than words. So there that doc office was with elderly people barely able to stand, all waiting in the hallway for the doors to open. Finally someone opened up the office and began checking people in. Even the doctor himself was up front for a while. I’ve NEVER seen that! What is it they say? “I’m so glad I work hard all day to pay taxes so you can stay home and watch Netflix?” Don’t get me started, they also say. I’ll stop here. Not everyone has a bad work ethic. My daughter is the next generation and she has an excellent work ethic so they are out there, but I’m just saying – this doc office was having an issue and it became our issue.

Finally got her in there and filled out her paperwork. She could not see to fill it out. And then they called me back to the back side of the office where they check out and make appointments. Mom had to have an Echocardiogram appointment and so they gave me the sheet to call to schedule that and then they scheduled a follow up in 2 months (only it’s more like 2.5 b/c we couldn’t get our schedules together) so they could go over the results. They said the most recent one looked like she had a leaky valve, where the valve was not closing properly. They may have to go back in and fix it (heart surgery). Mom says she is not having any surgery until after she moves in her house unless she just absolutely has an episode because she is not feeling any symptoms of it. They also have ordered two more prescriptions for her. I went and picked one up yesterday after work, after getting gas. I’m so glad I noticed I was almost on E (Empty).

So yesterday I made her Echo appt while on lunch break. I tried to get her primary care doctor set up but the one we picked is no longer taking Medicare patients and the one she wanted wasn’t taking on new patients anyway. That was the one close to our house which has been so nice for me and my own appointments. Of course Mom will be 15 min away so it won’t matter anyway – we’ll have to find her a doctor that takes her insurance and get an appointment. It’ll probably be the weekend at this point before I can get a chance to research it. Unless I can do it from work at lunch one day.

My schedule is unreal – there is almost no time for anything but work, make appointments, do home chores, do what everyone needs, eat, go to bed. I DID manage to watch two YouTube shows last night but had to stay up past my normal bedtime to do it.

Then again at 1:30 in the morning I woke up. I think my mind is just not getting time to process stuff so I wake up in the middle of the night so my mind can think. God pops stuff into it. Like we have a 30 year anniversary coming up! Or is it 29. Surely it’s not 30 yet I thought. But 30 it is! We’ve not planned anything special and likely won’t get to this year. I was thinking by year end, when I do the Year End Review, it is going to be unbelievable what all we have done this year. And I feel every bit of it whatever “it” is! lol

So work….my other big concern was getting the quarter end returns all filed and was given the data to work on it- I think Friday afternoon about time to go home. I was hoping to have had it last Thurs or Friday to work on it on my lighter days as most of the week I do payroll related activities especially Mon – Thurs a.m. So now that it is the last week of the month I’m having to RUSH through payroll stuff, work longer hours and yadayada, which is fine, but I’m just hoping there is enough time to get it all done. So naturally worried about that. Sometimes those folks who don’t have a good work ethic – at least they must be worry free. I on the other hand fret over every little thing wanting to meet the goals of my department and company. Sometimes you have to take life as it gives it and do the best you can. I have just prayed this week and will do what it takes to get it done, despite not really having had a good opportunity (meaning “time”) to do it. But what else is it they say “it is what it is” — I actually hate that phrase as I’ve said it so much in my work career over things you can’t control.

But it’s all good. My life is just one crazy TARTFART – that is just what came out of my mouth. I don’t know why. It just sounds about right! LOL LOL LOL

I was thinking if you put your life into a pattern what would it look like? LOL Yes, I actually think of such things!!!!!

I want it to look like these:

But my life is more like this:

And I better get on with it and try to knock out a bunch of payroll stuff so I can get to the quarter end stuff and have half a chance. My challenges this week are finding time to make all these appointments, worried about work, worried about being off for all Mom’s appointments and finding time for mine, lol! And now getting the flooring but that is strawberries on the ice cream and we have about got that whooped until it’s time for the carpet. Just relieved they are not doing it all at once so we have places to put things from some of the rooms while they do the other rooms. TIME is just the biggest challenge. It always has been. I don’t mind helping Mom, don’t mind working, but I am looking forward to having some down time whenever we can figure out how to get that worked in. 🙂 Just genuinely concerned about getting it all on the calendar and having something – anything left!

So what are YOUR Challenges this week?

Concert, Dinner and Shopping in Franklin, TN and other July 4th Weekend Activities!

Gabes, Franklin, TN near Cool Springs Mall

Saturday afternoon, we began excursion #2 of the day. We went by Gabes, the Cool Springs discount store. It was a LOT busier than in January when we went. Matter of fact, just people in your way a little more than you wanted. The isles are small and with a buggy two people can’t go down them well. But we got through the maze. I bought a couple of clothing pieces. I had my cart stacked with pants to try on as I just knew the fitting rooms would be open. But no, they lost some sales since I could not try on clothes. I mean…really? At this point they need to be open!!

I am going to put a “pants buying” mission on the calendar so I can get a shopping day for this. I also could use a few summer pieces for week since I have gained weight again and had given away all my large sizes. Ugh! I need to go the other direction. It’s always a battle on a normal basis, but give us a year like last year and then like this year – and we are having to eat horribly on the go, fast food and such. Plus Mom eats a lot of fattening type foods (white bread, not whole grain, a lot of burgers, regular pasta and not whole grain, fried foods, etc.) and we end up eating it too. For example, I gave up chips but those are back in the house. A huge temptation for me. So once I get myself a bit settled, I need to go back to working on my weight. ::sigh:: Once I lose again, I have two big containers of clothes waiting on me!

So I only have the two pair of jean capris for summer and really need at least ONE more pair to avoid having to do extra darks. Anyway, at Gabes, I bought a lot of the pump hand soap. We go through that pretty fast and I like to buy different kinds. I buy those face wash towelettes and I bought a bunch of those and some cosmetic items. It’s “the hunt” and the “good buys” that are fun to find.

The Bottle Shop, Franklin, TN

George got a gift card to the Bottle shop. I think it was for letting Katy and Cody have his car for a week. So we went and picked out a few things from there. It’s just a great place for finding a few special bottles of wine with good prices. They also have a few liquor items and also craft beer that you can take home in growlers. We never do though as we are usually doing other things and not going straight home. They also have a little gift section, including cards.

Gamay, a French Wine we love, The Bottle Shop, Franklin

You may have heard me talk about Gamay before. We had bought this and really liked it. I kept it in my photos for a long time so we could buy another one. And then I didn’t find it again, and finally just erased the photo. Now I found it! lol

We then had just enough time to get to our 5:30 reservations at Americana Taphouse. I picked this restaurant as the others nearby, Gray’s, 55 South, and a few others were just a little more pricey than I really thought we should spend right now. Instead $25 to $35 for an entre plate plus ala carte for everything you add, I was looking for $15 to $24 ish. We always add drinks, sometimes an appetizer or salad anyway. So “the price was right” at this restaurant. I had fish and chips and added a Caesar salad.

As six o’clock approached, more people began arriving and the place was almost entirely full by the time we left. Note to self: five-thirty is an excellent time to eat dinner out around these parts!

Americana Taphouse, Franklin, TN

The Americana Taphouse is still owned by Puckets. It’s no longer Pucket’s Boathouse. It was hard to keep fresh seafood coming in and they flipped it around to be more accommodating for what they could resource. So it’s kinda like REALLY GOOD pub food, but with a few extra Nashville like flairs, like George’s Hot Chicken PBLT – Pimiento, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato sandwich. They also had fish tacos. I almost had that, but I really wanted the cod (fish and chips). It was all really good!

I would have taken a pic of the food but we were so deep in conversation about a few things and having a great time talking so I didn’t even think about it.

Savory Spice Shop, Franklin, TN

Shopping on Main Street in Franklin is quite fun. Best to go before night time as many shops close, and even some were closed for the 4th weekend. Some are family owned type of shops, so anything goes. But some chose to be open. This spice store, The Savory Spice Shop, was open. We bought some pork chop seasoning and some dried shallots. They are very attentive and will let you try anything as long as they open it for you and give you the sample. A great little place!

East Main, Franklin, TN

“Oops! We have time left over, we shopped all around, what we gonna do now?”

“Well, there is little Wine Bar down the street? Wanna sip a glass of wine til concert time?”

The wine bar inside was calm, dimly lit, and quiet. Honestly, it was really really nice! The outside vibe was sunny with laughter and conversation. We chose the quiet spot with air conditioning, lol. We enjoyed picking the wine from the menu. I chose a French wine and we sipped, talked, and also sat some in quietness, checked phones, etc. We had an hour after all, so we could do it all. The bathrooms were nice. It was a converted old house and in the bathroom you could see the “charm” of the old house. It gave me a quick desire to “redo an old house” but then I thought of my age and quickly changed my mind. I just love to decorate is all. And it would be fun to decorate an old house into a comfort zone mixture of lace and wood. I’d have to give up my beach vibe rooms. Ahh, fun to dream but, enhhhh, probably more fun to just travel and decorate a cottage up if I ever did have to move again or RV’d with a little cottage base. (hint hint). Not gonna happen, but fun to dream.

Then on to the Franklin Theatre where our concert would be. Often I end up way behind George. He thinks I’m with him and I’ve stopped to take a pic. He looks around often though, he’s used to it. He’ll discover I’m not by him and I’m somewhere behind taking pics. I noticed my iPhone was not taking good pics also – I think I changed the settings back when River was here. I adjusted it a bit to get some type of photo and I guess never changed it back. I changed it back yesterday and it should be set to take more pics and adjust itself to the lighting. Either that or Apple’s done something with an update to make it worse where you will want the next new phone, lol. They wouldn’t do that really would they? Wait didn’t they do something to the battery life so you’d you buy the next one? I think they admitted that one didn’t they? If you know, let me know.

Gray’s on Main, Franklin, TN
George and Sonya, headed to see Striking Matches, Franklin, TN

Absolutely LOVED and enjoyed the Striking Matches concert. We had seen them years ago at Third and Lindsley. George bought their 3 CD’s Morning, Noon, and Night. And we got to meet them. What a treat!

A horrible and tired picture of me with half styled hair and not a lot of makeup or glam! But what a surprise! Was happy to have my picture taken with such talented folks that I’ve listened to for a long time. They have a YouTube Channel that they post some of their songs on. Just look for Striking Matches wherever you listen to your music.

These two met at Belmont and were thrown together in class to do a collaboration and what a collaboration it was! It’s funny how things come to be. Love watching them perform.

So we got home about 11:30 as we had to drive about 45 to an hour back to Mount Juliet. Bed felt good. I had clean sheets as I had changed them a bit earlier Saturday afternoon.

Sunday morning, I got up to get dressed for church so we could head out. George informed me that Mom had changed her mind and didn’t want to go and was fixing breakfast instead. So I grabbed a cup of coffee and breakfast was ready. Mom said we were out so late she thought it was best to stay home. I told her it wasn’t a problem that we were prepared to go as I had gotten up to get dressed. Then she said really the main reason was that she was hungry as she did not eat much the night before since we were gone.

So with breakfast on the table and the surprise last minute change of her plans, we didn’t go to church. I did my devo as I do EVERY day, not just on Sunday. And I guess we’ll see what next week brings. lol

So with not spending half a day out going to church, it opened up the morning. And I was able to take a walk after breakfast. I ate breakfast before I was really hungry. I usually wait til I’m hungry before eating. Anyway, didn’t want to be rude so I ate and then went for a walk to walk off dinner and breakfast.

The walk was nice.

We have some cherry tomatoes about to come in. And there are lots of herbs. George brought a lot of herbs in the house this weekend to dry.

Can you believe how busy our couple of days have been?

Then we went to see Paul and Judy yesterday. They are moving soon and had some things for sale and wanted to see if we wanted anything. George bought some books and Judy gave me a couple of books that she had bought that I’m looking forward to reading. It’s REALLY making me want to read. I think it’s a good time in my life to read more and get out of my own head a bit. I was so excited to meet their dog! Their dog was excited to meet us. We hit it off so well that Judy said “you can’t have my dog!” lol lol lol His name is Ozzie! He looks so much like Maisy dog only without the white spots.

Oh what fun and what delight this gave me, to pet and hug dog that looked and acted like my Maisy girl. I had prayed I would meet another dog like that. And I believe I did. He was a sweet dog. I’m so glad to meet him.

On the way home, George surprised me with a quick stop at a local taproom, Catch 22. We had a brewsky before heading home. Once home, I helped Mom change the sheets on her bed, fixed up a good lighted area for our “Puzzle Station”, which we started, and we watched some of my sailing shows, and George began fixing steaks. He actually grilled them! They were so good. They are good anyway he fixes them. We then began watching a history about Nashville after dinner – while waiting for dark thirty so the fireworks would start. We only got half way through. It’s very interesting.

Once it got dark we headed out to see the fireworks all around while sitting on the front porch. I do believe we made some memories. We had good disabilities for some fairly impressive shows. I think we were seeing a show from Circle K ranch not too far away and just at an angle where there were not many trees. Then neighbors down the street had some and a few streets over. We had some good ones.

We ate watermelon on the porch.

And most impressive was the view I saw from the news of the gathering in downtown Nashville. Wow. Just Wow. Everyone celebrating not only July 4 but just being able to get together as a crowd again. Here’s a screenshot.

Anyway, what a great 4th! One of the best ones I’ve had! Also want to share a pic that Mom shared on Facebook.

Mom, Me, and Dad

The scar on my right eyebrow (left in the pic, lol) shows. Before seatbelt requirements, I hit the dashboard once when the car driver slammed on the breaks – not sure who was driving. I don’t know what happened. A nurse was at Nanny’s house when we arrived and said “I think you better go get stitches” so we went to ER. Now I can “do my brows” – and have since high school – so you can’t see the scar. This pic was over 50 years ago I guess, lol.

Meanwhile in TX…….I can see River in my Dad. And Dad in River! lol

Ok ya’ll. What an entry. That should keep you for a few days. I’ll be back sometime before the work week is over – 2 to 3 days. So here’s what’s up:

I have to do two days worth of work tomorrow so it’s a LONG day – going in early and possibly staying late. Today we have a low key day, don’t wanna go anywhere but probably the store. I need to make sure Mom is set up for the week and me too, with lunches and snacks for work. I need to do some ironing for the week. I will try to do the bucket list and read and puzzle and make my Italian chicken cooked in a bag today. This week is kinda low key. We may do trivia night Thursday night with friends. Next Saturday is the day we go to look at flooring. 😉 We will be planning Mom’s birthday later in the month. I think she wants to do Hermitage Steakhouse so we’ll get that on the calendar and make reservations. Glad for a low key week though and now maybe things will settle a bit and we can relax some. I’ve enjoyed having a peaceful two hours to work on the blog. Need to get breakfast and start on some chores/cleaning so I can enjoy the day later.
