Valentine’s Day, Weekend Fun, and Switching from iMovie to Final Cut Pro Review

Hope you have a Happy Valentine’s Day. Hope you have a great day! I was surprised with roses this morning and a card that said “take these to work so you can enjoy them” – so I will – since that is where I am most of the time.

We had a fine time with my BIL and SIL. They arrived and we played a few games LCR and Pass the Pigs while we talked and caught up and waited for our dinner reservations at Hermitage Steak House. The steak was one I called “the best steak I ever had”. Oh my gosh. It’s flavor and tenderness – and the salad bar of course is the best in miles and is everyone’s favorite. Even the baked potato was good.

We had an amazing breakfast at First Watch in Hermitage. I got a healthy morning juice blend that had organic ginger, oranges, lemons, agave nectar, turmeric, beets, and several other things. It was really good but had like 30g of sugar. Had I know, I’d have not done that. But honestly it seemed like something that my body needed as far as the citrus goes and the ginger taste added so much to it. It was so good. It looks like an alcoholic drink but it was not.

We came home and they loaded a trailer with their items they had in our basement. And then after that George went to the store and I began working on the new intro in Final Cut Pro. I can’t say I’m elated or thrilled with the Intro I’ve created, but it’ll have to do for now. I made the project harder on myself than it really needed to be. I had pulled a lot of photos and videos with intent to use somehow but really only needed a few. I’m sure the Intro will evolve at some point but I created something very similar to what I had before. It’s finished and it’s done.

What a learning curve I’ve had to go through with Final Cut Pro. I was able to get started on the next video. It’s a bit shorter than most and less than my standard 19 minutes. My goal is 13 to 19 but sometimes it goes into 21 minutes or longer. I think this one is about 9 or so. It will go live Saturday at 7 a.m. as long as everything goes well. I just have to add a few layers (graphics) to it and it’s done. But I had to watch about 5 to 8 various YouTube videos for help during this learning process. So here’s my thoughts on Final Cut Pro.

My Review on Switching from iMovie to Final Cut Pro

I think it’s important to capture the “beginner’s” view point on this. I had maxed out pretty much what I could do with iMovie. Well, I can’t say I learned how to do EVERYTHING on iMovie but I was experiencing moments where iMovie would not allow me to do what I wanted to do. I wanted more options with text, more layering of graphics, and more use with gifs. I wanted to go beyond the limits that iMovie was keeping me in. So I was very excited to dive into Final Cut Pro.

My initial reaction was: “HOLY COW, WHERE ARE ALL MY NORMAL BUTTONS AND ICONS”. Pretty much had the same “frame layout” such as my media (clips, photos, etc.) is still in the left hand corner and the video frame was in the same place and then the timeline down below, but it seemed that not much else was the same. I had to watch a video straight from the start. I tried to mess around with the icons and buttons and saw a few things but was totally confused as to how to do even the basic things.

I remember having these issues below which I had to watch videos to overcome.

  • Somehow my viewer (where you watch your movie as you piece it together) was different and I couldn’t figure out why. I couldn’t tell where the frame was. It was off or disproportioned. Turns out somehow mine got on portrait mode instead of landscape – didn’t even know you could do that, lol. I think I found it by accident out of almost desperation while looking for what was wrong. I didn’t even know what to search for in a tutorial on that one but found the solution up above in my “file menus”.
  • I could not even get a picture or video to drag into the timeline as it always tried to get only part or a section of it and it was very frustrating.
  • Where the heck did everything go? Where was my text options, where was the color adjustment panel, where were the filters, and where were the timeline control buttons? Nearly everything was reconfigured and all over the place.
  • There was some confusion as to the difference between events and projects and how to even get started creating your files
  • There were moments where my photos went black and had to figure out what happened and how to get it back.
  • My record button for voice overs – where on earth did that go?
  • Where’s the delete options?

Pretty much every process had a learning curve. All the buttons were in odd places and some processes didn’t have buttons any more and some were hidden and things were all over the place. I am not an expert and still not able to give you a list of short cuts and a fabulous “starter’s guide” but I can give you some advice or tips to anyone wanting to make the switchover.

My Tips for Getting Started on Final Cut Pro

  • First of all, be patient and do not give up.
  • Be prepared to watch a few videos on YouTube as to how to start your files and projects, what proxy is, whether to edit your clips and photos from your hard drive, or a back up drive. Be prepared to watch videos on just about every process you need to do. One by one, just watch as you start to do each process of using it. You can find short videos out there to discuss most any thing you need as you need it. But I’d start with an overview if you can and then get specific from there as you need to learn it.
  • You will need to learn your Mac control short cuts for sure. Most YouTube videos will cover this in the coaching videos you find. Be prepared to take notes. Because it’s really necessary to know these or the editing process will be so cumbersome you will no longer enjoy it. For example Control B gives you the blade tool. And you can learn to copy attributes for the rest of your clips.
  • You will use your file menu options at the top a lot more, especially until you get used to using the short cuts using your Command and Control buttons and various letters of the alphabet that most Mac users knew already but I’ve been slow to learn.

What You will LOVE about Final Cut Pro once you get around the Learning Curve:

First of all, I’m not saying you have to get all the way around the curve, I’m still climbing up it. But the very things I set out to improve, are the reasons why I love it so much. It’s iMovie on steroids and with more choices and options.

  • More control with titles and texts and fonts as there are more options and more freedom with what you can do with it.
  • Practically as many layers as you need in the timeline for each clip, video, or photo.
  • Increased use of gifs and layering videos on top of videos
  • Increases the creativity levels – it’s endless as to the tricks and tips to learn
  • There’s more of everything: more transitions, more titles, more filters
  • And a drum roll please. The color correction and color grading. Oh my gosh, it’s so cool what all you can do and it’s easy once you watch a basic video.
  • Endless learning lol

So hopefully over time you will see some improvements in the videos. This next one is very basic and may not have the bells and whistles yet but I can tell you that the colorization I used of this video definitely enhanced it and made it more interesting to watch. I changed the hue some of my shirt to liven it up and take attention away from my make-up-less face! lol.

This Week’s Outlook

Valentine’s tonight, No blog entry in the morning! I’ll be working to finish up the video and get it uploaded and scheduled into YouTube. It’s Mom’s eye doc appointment week, which is on Friday. I am making myself get my colonoscopy appointment scheduled as well as Mom’s scan, getting my Isagenix auto ship cancelled, finishing Sister Wives for the season (reunion show), talking to George about streaming and changing our cable set up. I need to order a few things from Amazon and begin another Target order. And I am starting to layout what my next “challenge” will be. It will be simple but multilayered just in an effort to improve some habits. And we will also get ready for company coming this weekend too. I also will think about when to take Mom out and run some of her errands such as looking at furniture and going to AT&T. I’m also considering going back to church now that this next round of the virus is on the downswing, and things are calming.

We need to work on our routine with Mom a bit and make sure she is taken care of and not too lonely in our busy spurts. I’m sure she is ready for a meal out before long. She has met a neighbor friend that she is spending some time visiting with. They have been to each other’s house. So that is good. I hope she continues to meet more people over there so that she has more than just us to talk to as we are not available much for conversation and can’t see here but a time or two a week.

So I’m off of here to get going on the day and get out the door for work. Ya’ll have an excellent Valentine’s Day and let me know if you made it this far. I figured I bored everyone out with the techie talk on Final Cut Pro.

What you doing for Valentine’s?

Errands, Brunch, Time at Home, and Learning Final Cut Pro

Wow! What a weekend! Just wow! We got Mom’s errands run Saturday and that left yesterday for getting our errands done. We went to the bank (2 of them as one of them wouldn’t take electronic deposits), had some leftover “Christmas Shopping” to do as we still have one more Christmas to go with friends and we had one more stop to make to complete that. We also went to Good Will to drop off some things from our own basement and some old clothes that Mom had not wanted. We went to the grocery to get some more things and to pick up my BP Meds. In the midst of all that we had brunch at Just Love Cafe in Mount Juliet. It was so good. I was bad though. I had coffee with frothy milk in it because I had already had a lot of coffee and I was afraid it would be too much. I think it was some kind of latte. It was good but I could only drink half b/c it was more milky than I wanted. (I had asked for some kind of coffee that had a “little”milk in it. But that’s ok. It was good, just not for me). I got an old fashioned BLT. They put their bread in the waffle maker. They also have waffle light fixtures. lol It was all really good. I could hardly taste the bacon though. One can never have too much bacon is the problem there. And the tomatoes – well it’s just not tomato season, but despite that was still good and the service is awesome. I really wanted waffles but I didn’t want to have the shakes as I can’t have that much sugar. I didn’t need the bread or the chips but I’m vowing to be better this week and that doesn’t give me the shakes.

We came home and I was dismayed that our morning had taken up so much time but I finished the laundry yesterday, got started with videos trying to learn Final Cut Pro, and managed to cut George’s hair, which is hilariously done in the driveway next to the yard and garage for all to see. He really went a weekend or two longer but we have just been so busy and it’s too dark still after work in the evenings. I forget what we did last weekend but we couldn’t get it worked in. Now it’s done. I vacuumed the house and also washed George’s sheets, picked out my clothes for the week, and a few to iron up for next week.

I also figured out where the picture from work will go. This is one I bought at a yard sale and hung in my office at work (George had to hang it). So when our office moved I decided that I was going to use it at home and not wag it to work and have him come out and hang it again. I decided to put it in my bathroom. When we moved in this house and painted, I didn’t really have anything to go on the walls and I made it my “nature bathroom”. I hung up some of the photos I’ve taken and also it has pics from Texas.

But this is perfect for my bathroom here. So George will hang it for me here and I’ll find homes for the other pics. Might take those to work, lol. I can easily hang those. Although I do have a chalkboard and bulletin board that needs to be hung and I am going to need a drill for that. Also George had to go buy a new drill as his died.

My lights in the bathroom had gone dim. I’m not sure why – maybe George changed them out or they were dying, but it was so annoying. I told him I had to have light to see to put make up on. It’s been dim for a while but I’ve not said anything until they just got dimmer and dimmer. Those lights are hard to change in there and very delicate lamps. He usually takes care of that. Maybe he gave me the dim bulbs hoping I wouldn’t notice. Anyway, he fixed those for me and my morale jumped up 40% immediately.

I mainly took this pic so you can see my big rollers though. I found what to do with them. I’ll stick them under the sink when company comes lol. But that works for me on a day to day basis when I’m getting ready.

I also put my mouse pad that Katy made me behind them there. I don’t use a mouse pad as for some reason it slows down my movements with the mouse and it gets in the way, but I found another use for my Nonni mouse pad. I will see it more often here anyway! I’ll get to see Little Roo every morning.

Ok, so, Final Cut Pro. Oh my gosh. I have been terrified in the last 24 hours. And it is good that they didn’t give me free trial as I might have said “no way”. We paid the $299 for it. I can’t say yet that it was worth it, but I hear it is. I will only know that as I start to use it more and see what I can do with it. I’ve not even been able to get into all it’s features, as I couldn’t even get the basics done. I mean I even had trouble dragging a pic into the time line. It wanted to drag only a piece of it and there is an extra step you have to do. In Final Cut, you use more of your short cut commands to do things which are primarily things a Mac person would do, except for me, lol. Even importing files was different and I got strange messages.

And the viewer was throwing me off most of all. Somehow mine was in portrait mode and it took about 8 hours of tutorial and I still had to figure that one out on my own. I bet I pressed and tweaked every button there was. I finally went to the top of the file menus and found an orientation selection that made it right. Once I found that, I was good. As I now know pretty much what icons are what after about 8 hours of instruction. I think I’m ready to do my NEW INTRO now to the videos. However, my confidence is low because I said that yesterday too. I at least have the pics I’m going to use and I will be working on that this week as time allows. I have way too many photos to use for this intro so I won’t use all of them but I could – and just make them snap by really quickly with my voice over.

I hope that this is going to be a good relationship – b/w me and Final Cut. I think it will but it’s definitely something to get used to and learn all the bells and whistles. I was so freaked out about it at first. I had been looking forward to it for so long and then it was akin to trying to learn a new language. It was all Greek or Arabic. But I made a lot of progress in 2 days. And now I’ll try again to get this intro done. I think I know how to do it. But the videos may be worse before they get better ya’ll b/c this is like me trying to figure out how to fly without a pilot license. So look out! lol

Ok so here is the immediate to do list. Just ignore the Sister Wives to do, lol. I have to remind myself to watch it. I like watching it but I forget about it since it’s not on YouTube, so I stick a reminder in there. I think I have one or two more to go to be caught up. But that is not important. I need to make our doc appts for me and for Mom and get sympathy cards done. I put a reminder up for Little Bit b/c when he is outside and now that we don’t have dogs, I’m afraid I’m going to forget to stick food out. Usually George does it but I always want to make sure that we feed him twice a day. Anyway the to do’s are dwindling down *some* and life is starting to get into more of a routine, and more organized, and flowing better. I just really need time to recharge and it was good to get some things done at home.

I’m thinking about doing a new challenge. I don’t want it to be anything complex but it will be multi layered. Oh, I’m sure I’ll make it complex, what am I talking about? But just a push really toward healthier habits again, moving more, less bread, maybe even no bread, more greens. I’m doing pretty good with the fruit. I’ve not been as good with my water. I need to move more. So I’ll fix something up that helps me push toward getting those habits back in a routine. I’m just going for a shorter period of time though and not 55 days. A 30 push or even a 14 day push as it takes 14 days to set a habit (I’ve heard). I’m able to throw it around in my head now that our “impossible” days are over. Things are becoming at least doable now and we can breathe more!

Ok so, off to work I go, and I have mega amounts of stuff to get into the building! Suitcase full of work, my backpack, stocking up for the work week, gotta fix lunch and maybe some snacks up, and get all that in the car and then have to make probably two trips to get into the work building and I’m on 2nd floor (but I take the elevator when I have stuff with me like that).

So on with the week. I’ll probably not post tomorrow but go on in early for payroll. Mom is fixing dinner for us tomorrow night, a roast. That sounds so heavenly too. So we are meeting at her house and I’m stopping to get ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, and nutty buddies and milk for her that we didn’t get Saturday.

Meanwhile in Texas……….

Busy Holiday Season in the Making and Setting up My New iPhone 13 Pro Max

Good morning! God provides just what I need when I need it. He plugs a little glimpse of nature here and there into my day.

It has been a quick and busy week. Not sure I mentioned the dishwasher is on the blink. The guy comes to fix it Monday. Til then we have all been taking turns doing dishes.

They came to fix Mom’s screen door on her patio yesterday and she put some pots and pans up. George took her to the mattress store as he picked her up from her house on the way from work and they stopped and she ordered the new adjustable mattress and the extender frame (or whatever she needs for the other room). The new mattress is supposed to deliver on Tuesday. We’ll see. She is still not moved in yet. And won’t be til mattress comes in and is set up.

Our neighbor has agreed to help George move her final few pieces of furniture Saturday. Then perhaps we can make more progress and get her set up to live there. Her kitchen and pantry and closet are about the only thing that is “ready to go”. I expect that she may be able to stay there as early as next week if the mattress arrives and all is set up.

Today we have an eye injection appointment. And since the office is closing down early (everyone – but me – gets to go see the new offices and will be provided lunch). I’m so disappointed but trying not to think of it. Yesterday I started packing up my office to bring things home. I just decided I have short weeks until the move. Not going to be there much. Next week is Thanksgiving, a 3 day week and the one after we are going to the mountains at the end of the week, so – there is only time to rush through work and no luxury of time to work on packing. So yesterday I began packing personal things and bringing them home. I’m not sure what the area will look like so I don’t know if my current decor will work. I’ll bring everything home and start over. I may even use some of the plants I had bought from my office, for home use. I will need to snag some boxes from the basement to bring more home today. I boxed up all of our 2020 records and moved those around the office and labeled them and now my back, shoulders, and alignment is acting up again like they did with last week’s move of Mom’s clothes. The TMJ seems to be back and forth. It loosens up with coffee. But never went back to the severity of the first day. My right knee and right arm/rotater cuff is worse from lifting all the weight lately with all the moves. As one of my dear friends says “honey, we are not spring chickens any more and we can’t do things like we used to”. So as of now, it my last official time to move these boxes. Someone else will have to move them around. I can pack ’em but someone else going to have to move them around. I’m resigning from lifting as of this writing. 😉 My friend is right. I’m not a spring chicken any more. I will likely take Tylenol to get through the day.

My iPhone 13 Pro Max came in Wednesday. The phone instructions at sign on, made it easy to switch the phone with a few exceptions. I was pleased all my apps, photos, contacts and everything switched over exactly as it was on the iPhone 8s. I only stayed up an hour past bed time to make sure all was well so I would be ready to go in the morning and not have any issues.

Well, duh. I went to hit my audible app to listen to my current audio book and it wouldn’t let me. First of all I had to sign in, then it told me there was no network available. What? I’m on 5G? Well, what I had done was set my phone apps up – which I guess was like a computer. And at home on my WiFi it all worked fine. Didn’t think to text or call anyone. So my cellular service was still attached to the other phone, lol lol lol! Oh me. So I got to work and after my garnishment check run, I looked on line to see if it was something I could do immediately to make it work w/o having to switch SIM cards etc. Is that what you call it? My old phone, and my new box and instructions were all at home. So I found the AT&T activation link on their website. Luckily since I ordered from AT&T it came loaded with the card and I was able to immediately activate this phone to use my cell number. It took them about 5 to 10 minutes to make it active. I was worried having Mom now to be responsible for, that she would not be able to reach me. So I resolved that. And I had an audio book on the way home. All that said I think I’ll like the new phone. I will try to do an entry soon with the differences that I like and what I’m having to get used to. There’s no home button anymore and that wigged me out at first. Screen shots are different and powering on and off is different. I’ve had to google a lot to get going with it. But I like the changes so far. Can’t wait to try to photography and the charging is supposed to be faster with the new charging cord/plug. I have more memory. But it’s heavier. And I need a new phone holder for the car. It’s going to be too heavy for my magnet based holder.

The commute has been less than desirable lately – time wise. It’s taken 45 min to an hour some days to take the back way due to traffic and stop lights and school zones. So I may have to take the interstate some, but maybe it will calm down with the schools out. I don’t know it may be worse and everyone will be OFF and OUT getting ready for Thanksgiving. Who knows. I’m just sick of the long lines of traffic and it’s about to get longer. I guess we’ll have to see how this new work place goes. I wish they would allow for remote work. But no I don’t think they trust us to get our jobs done at home as they mentioned they did not have the technology to manage that. I guess that is what they meant. I’m only guessing. And mostly they don’t have the equipment. But that would sure be a nice option to have. A lot of companies are allowing remote work. I’d also be willing to do 4 ten hour days and have an extra day off. But I don’t know that anyone would be willing to work with us on things like that. That would be ideal and save a trip in and back and save gas. It will be what it will be and we will have to see how it goes. I just do not like being on the interstate anymore with all the crazie racers and gun waving uglies. The police can’t control them now it seems. The interstate is a free for all racetrack and crime ladened spree zone.

I have had to change the font size and line height on every dang paragraph that I have typed here. It has been the most annoying blogging experience that I have had for a while. I’m not willing to do this every time I blog. But it if I don’t it tries to make the font really big and the spacing far apart. I’m not sure what is happening. Geez. I guess WordPress made some changes. But something has to give. I may have to change themes or something. I’ve been wanting to make some changes but it takes time and nothing is ever simple. I’m leaving the next paragraph as is for a test and we’ll see what it does when published. On my end it’s big font and too much line space in b/w:

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving. I am anyway. We each have what we need for cooking. And I will also do my Christmas cards that day. The day after Thanksgiving and over the weekend I’ll be doing our tree and decorating. And if Mom has moved I’ll also move into the bigger room because I’m becoming squeezed out of my office with all the gifts we have bought. It’s getting tight in there and hard to move around. I’m also looking forward to getting the rest of my clothes back out and in use as well as more of the fall ones. I think we are ALL ready for this phase of Mom’s move to be done so we can get back to somewhat of our normal routines and spaces and way of doing things.

Good news, the new video is finished. I plan to schedule it for live at 7:00 a.m. CST tomorrow (Saturday). I will put a posting as I have time. Tomorrow morning is very busy! It’s Fancy trim, I have to provide breakfast for the crew, and also have to drop keys off at the old storage place, and then get Mom to her house to show them where the furniture goes, then get back and pick up Fancy at the spa. So big day. May not get to post that video is up until late in the day, but tonight I’m going to do a quick run through of it in private mode and make sure all ok before making it go live. It’s always been ok, but should something go wrong it won’t go live.

Meanwhile in TX. Guess who is pulling up and standing and also taking minor steps while holding on to things. He’s saying Momma, playing hide and seek that he starts with his parents, and becoming more interactive. He’s waving and learning a word here and there. He’s learning vocabulary even if he can’t say it yet. He knows names, people, dogs, his cartoon TV characters, lol. And he can give a kiss but with a full mouth open ha. He’s fun to face time with.

And I need to go. I will be back on Sunday. We have plans with my SIL and BIL after the move tomorrow so I don’t think I can hop on here until probably Sunday but I will try to at least post the video if I can!

It’s getting into the real crunch of the season here. I’m trying not to hyperventilate and take one moment at the time. I’m probably going to be late to work, have to get off early, work late on other days, go in early certain days – it’s just all haphazard at this point and we’ll do what we can and what we have time to do and the rest of it will have to wait. It is what it is.

I guess we’ll come up for air in February. Or maybe Spring. February we will be busy catching up on what all we are behind on. January is just impossible. lol Trips and Year end. I think I’m moving the new year goals out to March 1. lol. Can’t plan anything for Jan and Feb.

Ok Over and Out. I don’t have much time to get ready so I guess I’ll have to take the interstate this morning. ::sigh::
