Oh no….Where did the Quilts Go?

Three patchwork quilts with faces looking shy and worried behind a bathroom shower curtain

The Saga Continues

A family member had seen some of Mom’s things in the estate sale ad in the 14th hour and began asking for them. I told her it was too late. Blaming and stone throwing began. I told her she could call the estate lady and see if something could be done, but I wasn’t going to make the call because I was under contract and I wasn’t the one that was “too late”. So we worked it out through the estate sale lady, who had gotten the call from family member and checked with me to see if it was legit. She saved quilts and a cook book and put them in hiding in the bathroom of Mom’s house. Family member asked if I would get them as she was on a beach vacation. I told her we wouldn’t be over there again until after the sale but the estate sale people was putting the items back for her. I asked the estate sale lady if I needed to make time (that I didn’t have) to make a special trip over and get the items, afraid they would be sold by accident and she said “no ma’am we’ll have them hidden and safe here in the bathroom behind a “do not enter” sign. So we went on about our lives.

Then I got a text….

The estate lady sent a text saying “Did you get the quilts?”

OM Gosh, I knew what that meant. I said “No, why?”

It was a while before I got a response, but I knew….the quilts were gone. She said such and that she was making phone calls.

She put a note on the “estatesale.net” website asking if someone took the quilts hiding in the bathroom that it was not for sale and to bring it back. (You know this is unlikely to happen. But I guess she had to try in case it was an honest mistake, but it’s probably doubtful that someone is going to go back and look at the website after they had been to the sale already.)

My next words were “are you calling the family member or do I have to”? I wasn’t sure who of us should have been the one to do it. I mean we shouldn’t even be in this position, either of us. But I was kinda worried that this would happen. I have worked in retail before and I know this is a little different but I know how people are in a sale.

So no one knows what happened to the quilts. She said she would call family member and I assume she has at this point. I’m so glad because I didn’t want to be the one to tell her. She will turn it all around on me and the flaming blaming stone throwing texts will start again. To which I will likely be honest and respond, that you should have come and got it while the getting was good! This is what happens when you wait too late. It has created problems for me, the estate lady, the estate lady’s staff and now all of us are losing sleep over it. And it all could have been prevented if the responsibility had been taken to usurp the appropriate window of opportunity. And I might add, to not say “no” when someone asks you if you wanted any quilts. Everything time I think about this issue it angers me to no end.

I woke up in the middle of the night worrying about the quilts. Trying to guess what God’s intentions were here. Which is really none of my business as I declared it between Him and this person in my “family”. But of course my mind had to wander. Was the family member so mean to me that He didn’t want her to have the quilts, because I turned it over to Him?

I’m honestly sad that she doesn’t have the quilts. I don’t want to give her mine just because she didn’t grab her opportunity. I had offered her one of mine to keep the peace, but she declined. And now it’s no longer on the table because I am mad now that I have been treated so badly.

I’m thinking of the story of the groom coming and the brides having their lamps ready. Where is the consideration of respect to time and other people’s schedules? And to rules and obligations and to responsibility? IDK. It wasn’t involved in this situation. And I’m so embarrassed. Gosh I’m so embarrassed. I just want to duck under a shelf and not be seen again at all this. I feel so bad for our estate sale team. It could have all been so smooth. Now will they ever want to do business with us again? IDK. They probably think never again b/c this family is a crazy bunch of buffoons. And I wouldn’t blame them and on many days I would even agree with them.

I had to journal this morning to get this off my mind so I didn’t think about it all day. I don’t know what is going to happen. But I feel bad the quilts are gone. I really do, but then you have to consider, it didn’t have to be this way, if the time frames were honored. So…..

We also have a Celebration of Life today and I’m helping set up for it, for a friend in our Sunday School class that just passed away. It’s so sad. Cancer. All over. Not even time for treatment. So fast. We are all in shock, and will miss him terribly from our class – which is more of a life group honestly as we are all very close in our prayers and have a very active text thread daily to support us all in what we are going through.

So I can’t let all this stuff that could have been avoided, bother me today.

I also had a tick pulled off of me yesterday and I just remembered that my video went live about an hour ago and I need to promote that. I’m running out of time to DO my life. It’s just so busy but we will be gone most of the day. So lots of things just won’t be done today.
