Decluttering 30+ Categories of Household Items Over Time

Decluttering doesn’t have to be an all week long job. I set a plan to go through a list of areas in my home over several weeks this spring and it worked. A car load of stuff is out of the house! Sometimes it is hard getting rid of familiar things, but it helped me to vision someone else happily using the items, and I was happy to imagine the extra space we would have.
We have gone through our house twice. George initiated the first declutter movement in 2024 and I initiated the second one in 2025 after my retirement. But this time it felt different. I challenged myself to find at least 30 different types of items in the house that I could say bye-bye to, and it worked.
The video was filmed over a period of several weeks in spring of 2026, and I’m sharing with you. If you liked this, I can do another “over time” declutter video. You can watch it here.
We are still NOT minimalists if you wondered that. Far from it. (Ahem, George’s musical equipment, books, drinking glasses, etc. And my overload of coffee mugs, office admin, books, journals, home decor, etc.) But we have come a long way from where we were!
Stay tuned for updates on Mom’s move to assisted living both on the blog and vlogs. ;-). It’s crazy busy right now, but I’ll give an update soon.

Loved the declutter video. With our retirement, we are trying to do this too. I have a HUGE stack of stuff sitting downstairs now, ready to go. I am ready to generate some good karma and load it up to donate it all, but my husband is convinced we can have a yard sale. We did our last one about 10 years ago and I said “Never again!” I like going to them, sometimes, but I hate having them. They are so much work, and I am not a negotiator. We’re at a bit of a standoff at the moment. We might compromise and sell a few things on Facebook Marketplace and donate everything else. He’s getting there so I don’t want to push, but I am so tired of looking at it all! We’re not minimalist either, and we still have a few areas of the house to do, but my main objective was to clear closets and drawers so I wasn’t constantly moving multiple items to find what I needed. For the most part, I think I achieved that. Things got out of hand a couple of years ago when I lost my parents and inherited most of the stuff. With the passage of time, it is easier to get rid of things that aren’t that important. Still have more to do but I think we made a good start. Garage & garden shed are next! Good luck on your decluttering, yes, please make your efforts into a video! Fun to see how someone else makes decisions to let things go, sometimes the reasoning helps!

Oh it’s tough when you both can’t decide on what thing to do. We can’t decide a lot of time to even get rid of something. If he wants to get rid of it I want to keep it and vice versa. We don’t have good luck here in Mount Juliet with yard sales in our neighborhood. And it’s sometimes hard to even find them to go to. I’m scared of Facebook marketplace but I think you could meet up in a safe place maybe – like police station parking lot or post office or somewhere where there’s lots of responsible people. Good luck with it.

I think of donating as blessing someone else and somehow that makes it easier.

I’m hope your Moms ok. She’s been through a lot since the surgery. Prayers the new place works out. And they take good care of her . She deserves good things after all these years.

Yeah she said she didn’t feel good today, just weak and shaky. But she’s all moved in now. She’s handled most of it well. She’s a little aggressive about asking for things from the house knowing there was six weeks to get ready for the move and I’m not sure she packed a stitch of anything but has a good reason to be aggressive I guess as she thinks of things after the move is over and it’s resulting in us taking multiple car loads over to her which is what I was trying to avoid. I’m afraid I’m the snippy one because we are having to do the moving when we hired people to do it but here we are every day for the last 5 days taking car loads over. I’ve about lost my mind!
